The New England Patriots decided not to select a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft, but they've added another undrafted quarterback. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, New England is signing Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke.

Heading into this year's draft, the Patriots were expected to add someone in the draft due to Tom Brady departing in free agency. Instead of doing what was expected, New England never added another quarterback to their roster during the draft.

Shortly after the draft completed, Bill Belichick explained that the choice to stray away from a quarterback ‘wasn't by design'. Nevertheless, the Patriots have now added two undrafted quarterbacks in the past 24 hours. Prior to adding Lewerke, New England signed a deal with J'Mar Smith out of Louisiana Tech.

As for Lewerke, he was a three-year starter at Michigan State, showing regressing in his final two seasons. Back in 2017, when he was a sophomore, Lewerke actually showed some potential, throwing for 2,793 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Then, in the following season, Lewerke would finish the 2018 season with 2,040 yards, eight touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. It didn't get much better for him in 2019, as he contributed 3,079 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

In Lewerke's defense, he didn't have a great offensive staff at Michigan State and lacked weapons around him. Still, there's a ton of work that needs to be done in his game before he can carve out an NFL career.

There were rumblings that the Patriots could be adding one of the quarterbacks in this year's draft class, with Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer as the only quarterbacks on the roster. While they've added quarterbacks, it's just not the ones that fans envisioned them getting.
