The New England Patriots are trading wide receiver Demaryius Thomas to the New York Jets in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2021, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Thomas failed to record a catch or a target in New England's 33-3 beatdown of the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night. He signed a one-year contract with the Patriots in April, and figured to be among a veteran group of receivers catching passes from Tom Brady this season as New England tries for back-to-back Vince Lombardi trophies.

The situation changed over the weekend, however, when the rapid dissolution of Antonio Brown's tenure with the Oakland Raiders led to him signing with the Patriots, giving them another valuable weapon in the passing game. Brown will make his debut with New England on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

Thomas was released by the Houston Texans in February. The 31-year-old suffered a torn achilles tendon in his team’s December 23rd loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, robbing him of the chance to play in Houston’s playoff game. Thomas began the 2018 season with the Denver Broncos, who drafted him in 2010, but traded him to Houston in late October.

Thomas finished the season with 59 catches and 677 receiving yards, the lowest numbers since his sophomore campaign in 2011.

Expect Thomas to get a real chance to make an impact with the Jets, who are in dire need of as much proven talent as they can get at the skill positions. While he's a far cry from the impact player who made five consecutive Pro Bowls from 2012 to 2016, Thomas' size, strength, and experience should make him a worthwhile target for sophomore signal-caller Sam Darnold.
