The New England Patriots bringing in Cam Newton doesn't have anything to do with Jarret Stidham's performance according to a source, per Jeff Howe of the Athletic:

“A source also implied the signing of Newton has nothing to do with Stidham’s performance. Considering the Patriots just conducted a virtual offseason workout program without any official on-field work, that rationale checks out.”

Before Newton signed with the Patriots it looked like the starting quarterback job was going to be handed to Stidham, but now he is going to have completion on his hand.

Newton was once one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, but each of the last two seasons he has dealt with injuries and that have hurt his production. The McCourty brothers — Jason and Devin, who both play for the Patriots — believe that bringing in Newton is going to make the team better. Devin said he is excited about the competition that is going to come out of the quarterback room:

“I would think adding him to our quarterback room with [Brian] Hoyer. You have veterans in there. You have young guys in there. I think it’ll give us a really good chance to be good at that position. It’s always great to have a bunch of good players, and adding to that.”

The Patriots are trying to pull out all the stops to try to replace quarterback Tom Brady, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the offseason after 20 years in New England. The Patriots were already going to have a lot of eyes on them during training camp thanks to that big change, but with Newton now in the fold, it's going to be one of the storylines to follow this summer.
