There is plenty of speculation regarding the future of New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. It appears he may be planning to stick around for the 2019 NFL season.

It is no secret that Gronkowski has contemplated retirement over the last few years now. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Patriots are preparing for his return:

In discussing the TE market, I passed my along what I know on #Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski: His agent says he has not made a firm decision, but the team is tentatively planning as if he'll be there in 2019 and some people close to him believe he wants to play.

Of course, nothing is set in stone at the moment. Gronkowski has been in the final stretch of his playing career for quite some time now. The prospect of him hanging up his cleats is still not too far-fetched at this point.

Regardless, this is an encouraging update for New England. Although Gronkowski may be coming off a bit of a down 2018 campaign, there is no question that the Patriots offense is much better when he is in it. New England would undoubtedly welcome him back with open arms if he decides to play another year.

If Gronkowski does return, the Patriots may still need to find a potential backup option. The front office spent most of last season trying to beef up their receiving corps. They may need to do the same if Gronkowski plans on leaving in the near future.
