Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul Pierce is expected to miss the team's season opener versus the Portland Trail Blazers due to a sprained ankle.

The Clippers' starting forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute returned to practice Saturday from a knee injury, but his limitations aren't fully known yet.

That leaves the team thin at the small forward spot, and will force coach Doc Rivers to make several unplanned adjustments to compensate.

Pierce will return to action when he can, but at 39 years old, he can't afford to rush it.

The veteran wingman has expressed his desire to end his career with the Boston Celtics, where it all began for him, before the season is over.
