With the devastating news that recently surfaced about Solomon Hill being scheduled to miss between six to eight months due to a torn hamstring, head coach Alvin Gentry and his staff are already starting to think ahead and are reportedly looking into adding a small forward in their lineup.

According to a piece made by Jim Eichenhofer of Pelicans.com, the team is contemplating on signing a free agent who is a natural at the three spot, but also brings along some versatility.

“I think we’ve got some players who can fill in, but we’ve really got to go out and find another guy of that size with a little bit of versatility, that can play some (power forward) or maybe even some (shooting guard) for us, depending on who we try to get,” Gentry said. “Right now we’ve got to decide if we’re going to add a guy and how we can do that.”

The Pelicans have a very formidable starting unit with four All-Stars, Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins up front, and Jrue Holiday and Rajon Rondo in the backcourt. The obvious hole they have is the three spot, and the only legitimate small forwards on their roster are the oft-injured Quincy Pondexter and Darius Miller, who last played in the league back in the 2014-2015 campaign.

The good news for them is there are still some viable options left from the free agent market. The likes of Matt Barnes, Shabazz Muhammad, and Gerald Green are all unsigned, and could intrigue them the most. It can be expected that they are only looking to pay the veteran’s minimum for their potential addition, and it remains to be seen if they can snag a quality player for that amount.
