Zion Williamson of the New Orleans Pelicans had to leave the NBA “bubble” in Orlando, Florida ahead of teams returning to action in two weeks, and his teammate JJ Redick discussed what he told the rookie after Zion was forced out of the bubble due to a “family emergency.”

“I reached out to Zion and I told him we’re going to do our best to hold it down for him until he gets back, whenever that is,” Redick said on his podcast, via Cody Taylor of Rookie Wire.

“As a teammate, he is a family member, so we’ll do our best to keep this thing rolling. Whatever is going on, we want the best for him. I feel awful for him because so much of this season has been a rollercoaster for him and it seemed like he was in such a good place so, hopefully, we get him back soon.”

Certainly, the Pelicans will not be as threatening without the brilliance of Williamson, who only played 19 games with the team before the season was suspended in March after suffering a knee injury. However, in those 19 games, Williamson looked every bit the part of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Williamson piled up striking per-game numbers of 23.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists, all while playing under 30 minutes per game. The hulking forward, not known for his range from downtown, also shot a staggering 46.2 percent from deep (though on limited attempts – 6 of 13 on the season).

While it will be nice to have NBA basketball back, it just won’t be the same without Williamson suiting up for the Pelicans. With that said, let’s hope his family issues are resolved positively.
