The New Orleans Pelicans had finally added some much-needed frontcourt depth with the signing of power forward Terrance Jones — or so everyone thought. Early reports confirmed that the Pelicans had been on the verge of signing Jones to a 10-day contract.

However, it seems New Orleans has had a sudden change-of-heart, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports:

It was quite the year for Jones in 2017. He had been with the Pelicans to start the 2016-17 NBA season before he was waived during last year's All-Star break following the acquisition of center DeMarcus Cousins. Jones appeared in just three games for the Milwaukee Bucks before being waived once more.

He then spent time overseas playing with the Qingdao DoubleStar Eagles in China over the summer before he was picked up by the Santa Cruz Warriors of the G League. Jones has played well for the Warriors' affiliate, averaging 17.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists in eight games.

The Pelicans are in desperate need of another scoring punch outside star big man Anthony Davis with Cousins out for the season after suffering an Achilles injury last week. That made Jones a prime candidate as a possible solution for the time being. The former first-round pick possesses a versatile offensive skill set. He has even flashed some range in Santa Cruz by shooting 36.8 percent from 3-point land.

However, it seems New Orleans could potentially have something else in the works considering the recent turn of events. With the trade deadline quickly approaching, they will need to make it happen at some point within the next week.
