Former Detroit Pistons point man Chauncey Billups gave a bit of insight as to what his former franchise needs ahead of this upcoming season, singling out quite the glaring weakness of this team moving forward.

“You kind of gotta upgrade the backcourt,” said the now-ESPN analyst and former NBA champion. “I think in the NBA right now it's all about guard play. Blake [Griffin] has been great, Blake has been an awesome addition. Andre [Drummond] has started to get better. You hope that he continues to take the same steps. I thought the draft last night with Sekou [Doumbouya] was good, but he's young, he's a kid, he's 18, 19 years old, he is a baby.

“You gotta get more production out of the backcourt. I love coach [Dwane] Casey — former Coach of the Year. They got things in place, but they got to find an identity. One thing about Detroit is that's a hard city, it's like it's blue collar; so you want your team to embody that.”

In short, the Pistons are in dire need of a capable point guard.

While Reggie Jackson had a rare healthy season in 2018-19 (played all 82 games), it's evident that a scoring point guard isn't the best fit for a team that bases most of its production around an All-Star frontcourt of Griffin and Drummond.

The Pistons recently traded for Tony Snell to give them some shooting, and they already have pieces in place like Luke Kennard and could try to sign Wayne Ellington for another year to bolster their outside shooting.

Yet their need for an able backcourt playmaker is of the essence, and it's one issue they must address in the offseason to bring in a better team than what they mustered in 2018-19 after being swept at the hands of the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round.
