Christian Wood has been claimed off waivers by the Detroit Pistons, the team announced on Thursday.

Wood was waived by the New Orleans Pelicans earlier this week. He was originally acquired by the team in March, being claimed off waivers following his release from the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 23-year-old played in New Orleans final eight games of the regular season as the team, out of the playoff race, shut down several key contributors. In 23.6 minutes per game, including two starts, Wood averaged 16.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks, shooting 53.3 percent from the field and connecting on 4-of-19 from beyond the arc. He played in 13 games for Milwaukee last season, spending most of his time with the organization in the G-League, dominating for the Wisconsin Herd en route to 29.3 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game.

Detroit now has the league maximum of 15 players on the roster. Wood's $1.7 million contract for 2019-20 is only partially guaranteed, ensuring the cash-strapped Pistons wouldn't pass the luxury-tax threshold by adding a final player.

At 6-foot-11 with plus athleticism, a long wingspan, and comfort with the ball, it seems only a matter of time until Wood latches on with the right team. We'll find out this season whether or not the Pistons fit that distinction.
