With NHL free agency just days away (July 13th) it was priority number one for the Nashville Predators to extend franchise star Filip Forsberg before he hits the open market. The organization has done just that on Saturday.

Per Dawn Davenport, Forsberg has signed a $70 million extension with the Preds that will see him get paid around $8.5 million annually across the next eight years:

Predators GM David Poile hinted at a Filip Forsberg deal coming earlier this week as well. Via The Athletic:

“We're talking every day,” Poile said after the NHL general manager meetings in Montreal on Wednesday. “We've got a deadline coming up here (July 13) so obviously it's hugely important to us and I'm sure it's important to them. Both sides are from the beginning saying the right things that we'd like to get this done. Hopefully, we just keep moving toward that.”

Nashville was the only team allowed to offer Filip Forsberg an eight-year extension and they've done just that. The Swedish-born center has been absolutely brilliant for this team since coming into the league in 2012. Last season, he scored 42 goals and supplied another 42 assists in 69 games. It was his best campaign to date, therefore it's not exactly surprising the Preds handed him a bag of money.

Filip Forsberg will receive a $2.5 million pay bump after making around $6 million across the last six seasons. The Predators finished in fifth place in the West in 2021-22 but were swept by the Colorado Avalanche in the first round, who went on to win the Stanley Cup. Nashville already made some noise this offseason as well, trading for defenseman Ryan McDonagh.
