Apparently it's a royal house divided when it comes to who to root for in rugby at Prince William and Princess Kate's estate. It's been reported that the royal couple are cheering for opposing teams in the upcoming Rugby World Cup, and that tension has Prince George caught in the middle.

It's all in good fun, of course, but now that their eldest son is old enough to occasionally attend sporting events with mum and dad, it's time for Prince George to decide whether he supports mom's team, England, or dad's, Wales. Why the ultimatum? Because both teams kick off the tournament this weekend, and as Patron of Welsh Rugby, the Prince of Wales will be in Bordeaux to watch Wales face Fiji on Sunday, while the Princess of Wales, who is Patron of the Football Rugby Union, will watch England take on Argentina on Saturday in Marseilles. If Prince George wants to go to one of the matches this weekend, it's time to pick a side!

This is basically the British royal equivalent of families where one parent loves the Yankees and the other loves the Red Sox. Or an Ohio State-Michigan house, as a classic “This is Sportscenter” commercial imagined. Not that I in any way endorse these unnatural pairings — but full disclosure — living in my own mixed marriage household (UCLA/USC – Go Bruins!), I just know that it is possible for offspring to grow up in such a setting without turning out too maladjusted (although our oldest did refer to both schools as “UCSLA” until elementary school).

In short, Prince George — whether you become a Wales rugby fan like Prince William, or an England fan like Princess Kate, your parents will love you just the same. Just don't root for France.
