The Green Bay Packers made a move early in the NFL offseason to part ways with one of their longtime star players in veteran wide receiver Jordy Nelson. This was a surprising move by Green Bay as many expected Randall Cobb to be the player released, but Nelson was let go and signed with the Oakland Raiders as a free agent shortly after.

With Nelson now with the Raiders, quarterback Derek Carr has a new primary receiver to throw with the former Packers star replacing Michael Crabtree. There have been some concerns about whether Nelson can continue to play at a high level due to his injury history at 32 years old, but Carr doesn't see the one-time Super Bowl champion slowing down, via Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle.

“The thing you hear about that he can’t run anymore — that’s false,” said quarterback Derek Carr. “I can tell you he’s one of the fastest skill guys that we have still. He can run.”

This is great news for the Raiders. Oakland is coming off a forgettable 2017 campaign in which the offense took a step back after a breakout year in 2016. If Nelson still has his speed and playmaking ability on the field, the Raiders may be able to bounce back offensively, especially with the other added weapons like Martavis Bryant, Doug Martin, and the return of Marshawn Lynch.

“He’s very route-savvy, he’s very smart, he’s constantly on the coaches: ‘Yell the coverage out, I need to know my adjustment,’” Carr said. “He’s pushing the envelope that way as well. I can’t say enough good things. I can’t believe Green Bay let him go, but I’m glad he’s here.”

Last season with the Packers, Nelson caught 53 passes for 482 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games.
