Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther admits the 2018 NFL season was his hardest year in coaching.

Guenther shared his sentiments with SilverAndBlackPride.com's Tyler J. Smith after Raiders OTA practice on Monday.

By far my hardest year in coaching. I just felt like the kind of players we were looking for, we've added a lot of those guys throughout the draft and free agency. Guys that kind of fit what we're doing.

Right now in the NFL everyone [is saying], ‘Oh, we're going to surprise everybody.' And all these great predictions. Right now everybody feels great about their team. I'm just trying to get them better every day.

The Raiders stumbled to a 4-12 record in 2018 – their worst record in five seasons. They also missed the postseason for the 15th time in the last 16 years. No wonder Guenther's first year in Oakland was his hardest in his 25 years of coaching experience.

The Raiders are looking to bounce back from a dismal 2018 campaign. They drafted Clelin Ferell, Josh Jacobs, Johnathan Abram, Trayvon Mullen, Maxx Crosby, Isaiah Johnson, Foster Moreau, Hunter Renfrow, and Quinton Bell in April.

They also signed wide receiver Antonio Brown, linebacker Vontaze Burfict, running back Isaiah Crowell, tight end Luke Willson, and guard Richie Incognito. With Brown, Burfict, and Incognito in tow, Raiders head coach Jon Gruden has an interesting locker room, to say the least.

Guenther hopes the 2019 NFL season will be a better one than 2018. After all, there's nowhere to go but up for the Silver and Black.
