Jon Gruden and Rich Gannon combined to deliver two of the best seasons in recent memory for the Oakland Raiders. However, Gannon has passed up the chance to team up with his old head coach once more as he turned down an offer to be Gruden’s quarterbacks coach.

Gannon, who has spent the last 12 years as an NFL game analyst for CBS, apparently wanted no part in the intensity and time commitment needed for the job under Gruden.

Gannon spent six of his 17 NFL seasons with the Raiders. He was a Pro Bowl quarterback in his first four seasons with the team from 1999-2002, the first three of which were under Gruden.

Gannon had a 30-18 record as a starter under Gruden, and they made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game in 2001. He later won the NFL MVP award after Gruden left the team in 2002 as he led the Raiders to the Super Bowl.

The Raiders will have a brand new set up on offense for the upcoming season. Former Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Greg Olson has taken over as offensive coordinator for the recently fired Todd Downing, but Gruden will still call plays.

And with Gannon turning down the QB coach job, Gruden and Olson may just leave it to themselves to handle that role apart from their other duties.

Gruden has already expressed his excitement about working with Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who took a significant step back this year following an MVP-caliber season in 2016.
