The Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr will enter the final year of his contract in 2022. That's typically when plays sign extensions, to avoid any in-season drama about whether a player will be retained or become a free agent. Well, Carr is apparently looking to become one of the highest paid players in the NFL.

According to Vegas Nation reporter Vincent Bonsignor, Carr's camp is looking somewhere in the range of $40 million per year for an extension.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is currently making exactly $40 million per year. That is the third highest per-year contract in the NFL, behind only Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes ($45 million per year) and Bills QB Josh Allen ($43 million per year).

The Raiders are coming off of their first playoff appearance since 2016, but only their second appearance in 20 years. Last season, Carr finished with a career-high in passing yards, throwing for 4,804 yards. It was the fourth straight year that Carr surpassed 4,000 yards passing. But he only threw 23 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. A less than two-to-one ratio of TD's to interceptions typically does not garner top five contracts.

Bonsignor points out that no proposals have been exchanged from either side yet, but the Raiders have openly expressed their goal to resign Carr to an extension.

Carr has also expressed his commitment to the team, wanting to remain in Las Vegas. It is undeniable that the Raiders have been a losing franchise for the vast majority of this century. Derek Carr is the best quarterback they have had since Rich Gannon. But $40 million per year will significantly hamper the Raiders ability to improve that defense.
