Through the first couple of months of this offseason, the Los Angeles Rams have had the pending contract situation with star defensive tackle Aaron Donald hovering over the franchise.

There have been talks in recent weeks about a new lucrative extension getting done at some point this offseason to have Donald in order to keep him under contract for the long haul. According to Andrew Siciliano of The NFL Network, head coach Sean McVay says that he has been in constant dialogue with Donald over the offseason that has given him a sense of great optimism that a contract will get worked out.

The Rams have remained a straight path toward hammering out a deal over this offseason in order to avoid this situation lingering onto into the 2018 season where he would be playing on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal. General manager Les Snead stated that Donald will have a new extension to make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league.

Through his first four seasons in the league, Donald has quickly earned the reputation as arguably the best defensive player in the league. He is coming off yet another highly productive campaign where he tied his career high with 11.0 sacks along with a career-best five forced fumbles and 41 total tackles that helped him earn the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. He has been the unquestioned anchor of their defensive front that is just entering the prime of his career that should have several more highly productive campaigns in front of him.

It may just be a matter of time for him to earn a lucrative contract that could be north of the six-year, $114.1 million deal that star defensive end Von Miller from the Denver Broncos that is currently the largest contract for a defensive player in the NFL.
