The Baltimore Ravens headed into the NFL offseason after missing the playoffs looking to shake things up. Head coach John Harbaugh and company knew they had some glaring issues on offense with the quarterback position potentially needing to change this year or in the very near future.

One of the most surprising moves by the Ravens during this offseason was signing quarterback Robert Griffin III. After bursting on the scene in the NFL in 2012 with the Washington Redskins, the former Heisman Trophy winner has struggled to stay healthy and now seems to be embracing more of a mentor role for a player with a similar style of play in rookie Lamar Jackson, via Ben Baskin of Sports Illustrated.

“I’m trying to help nurture him as much as I possibly can,” Griffin says, “so that when he flies away, he is ready to fly away. Because when you watch it fly away, at that point it’s up to that bird.”

Griffin could very well be the ideal mentor for Jackson as the Louisville product makes the transition to the NFL level, via Baskin.

“I try to take that and look at it in a positive way to try to help Lamar navigate a lot of the things that I had to navigate on my own,” Griffin says. “I feel like he really trusts me and believes what I’m telling him and I think that’s made him a better player already in a short amount of time.”

Although Joe Flacco is expected to remain the starter in Baltimore heading into the 2018 campaign, Jackson could put some pressure on the seasoned veteran as he brings a different dynamic to the position. It remains to be seen how long Baltimore will wait to make a change if Flacco struggles. Jackson and Griffin will have to be ready for when their time comes.
