Why The Red Sox Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Red Sox have been average for the most part this season, but are playing better recently. They have a 38-35 record and have won five of their last six games and three straight, including the first game in this series. Statistically, the Red Sox are in the top five of the MLB behind the plate and then are top 10 in pitching. Tyler O'Neill, Triston Casas, Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Rafael Devers are all talented players and have been solid to a varying degree behind the plate so far this season. Regarding their pitching Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford, Nick Pivetta, and Garrett Whitlock despite his current injury have made up a great pitching staff.

The Red Sox are starting Brayan Bello on the mound where he has a 6-4 record, a 5.00 ERA, and a 1.40 WHIP. He has allowed 38 runs on 64 hits with 24 walks and 56 strikeouts through 48 total innings this season. Through the 12 games he has appeared in this year the Red Sox are 7-5. Bello has been a weak link in the Boston Red Sox pitching staff and has been inconsistent. It might not matter because the Blue Jays have also struggled with consistency behind the plate.

The Red Sox's offense has gotten better and is red-hot currently. They are fifth in team batting average at .253 after finishing last season at .258. The offense is led by Rafael Devers, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Jarren Duran in most batting categories behind the plate. Devers leads in batting average at .282, in home runs at 14, and in OBP at .374. Rafaela leads in RBI at 40, and then Duran in total hits at 83. Gausman has been solid and presents a challenge despite how well the Red Sox offense currently plays.

Why The Blue Jays Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Blue Jays have been inconsistent to start the season towards a 35-37 record. They have lost three of their last five games. The team has struggled behind the plate with their bats and then their pitching has also struggled, with both being in the bottom half of the MLB this season. Daulton Varsho, Justin Turner, Bo Bichette, George Springer, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. have stood out behind the plate. Jose Berrios and Yusei Kikuchi have been their best pitchers up to this point in the season. Toronto has the talent, but they have not found any consistency up to this point in the season.

The Blue Jays are starting Kevin Gausman on the mound and he has a 5-5 record, a 4.08 ERA, and a 1.27 WHIP. Through 75 innings, he has allowed 39 runs on 79 hits with 16 walks, and 75 strikeouts. The Blue Jays are 7-7 in his 14 appearances this season. This will be a difficult matchup for him because the Red Sox have been great behind the plate recently. He has been solid, but this is a big challenge.

The offense for the Blue Jays has struggled towards a .233 which is 21st in the league, after finishing last season with a .256 batting average. Daulton Varsho and Vladimir Guerrero Jr lead the team in almost every important batting category. Guerrero Jr. leads the way in batting average at .284, in OBP at .373, and in total hits at 78. Varsho then leads the way in home runs at 11 and RBI at 35. This offense has struggled, but this matchup against Brayan Bello helps because he has been the weak link in a usually great Boston pitching staff.

Final Red Sox-Blue Jays Prediction & Pick

The Red Sox are playing better than the Blue Jays. They are streaking leading into this matchup and have already won the first game in this series. Gausman has a slight pitching advantage over Bello, for the Blue Jays, but the Red Sox have a massive advantage on offense. This should be close, but the Red Sox are better and should not only cover but win outright on the road.
