Case Keenum's chance to win the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins job is within reaching distance. With incumbent starter Colt McCoy missing time due to soreness, following a leg break in 2018, and first-round pick Dwayne Haskins potentially not being ready for live NFL action, Keenum has been practicing with the first team in training camp.
With his observations of Redskins spring practice and training camp in mind, Washington Post's Rick Snider labeled Keenum as the starter,
“Keenum has looked like the more polished passer throughout camp over McCoy, whose health problems cost him two previous chances to remain the Redskins’ starter. Now Keenum has a clear edge over his veteran counterpart, while Haskins’ steady improvement might make him the No. 2 option no matter who starts,” Snider said.
While Keenum looks like the best option for Week 1, the future of the Redskins' organization rests in Haskins' hands. McCoy, on the other hand, is a Jay Gruden favorite and continues to be listed as the starter in their preseason depth chart.
In culmination, the Redskins' quarterback room, and who exactly, will start in 2019 is a tough one to figure out. But, Snider labels Keenum as the frontrunner for the job, as McCoy heels up and Haskins develops.
Said Snider: “The quarterback carousel of last year — when four passers started — seems destined for another go-around. The Redskins appear incapable of settling on just one QB — either Keenum or Haskins will become the 25th starting quarterback since 1993.”
“For now, though, Keenum looks like the front-runner.”
Keenum started the entirety of the 2018 season as a Denver Bronco. On the year, he threw for 3,890 yards, 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions on a 62.3% completion rate. The Broncos shipped him off to Washington along with a seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
