The Washington Redskins’ pass defense took a big hit on Monday, when they lost cornerback Josh Norman to a rib injury just before halftime of their game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, it is being reported by Jake Russell of The Washington Post that the Pro Bowl corner is out for “at least a couple of weeks” according to Redskins head coach Jay Gruden.

Norman hurt his rib late in the second quarter of their 29-20 loss to the Chiefs while attempting to tackle Kansas City wide receiver, Chris Conley. Norman went to the locker room afterward and took X-rays before being ruled out for the rest of the game.

Norman has been one of the Redskins’ best secondary pieces and is often assigned to opposing teams’ No. 1 receivers. He’s going to be a tough one to replace downfield, but the Redskins are still hoping Norman can avoid getting sidelined by the injury.

The Redskins are ranked fourth and fifth in DVOA against opponents No. 1 and No. 2 wideouts, respectively.

According to John Keim of ESPN, Gruden has also floated the idea that Norman won’t miss any time at all because the Redskins would not play until Week 6, thanks to a Week 5 bye.

Coach Jay Gruden said the cornerback will miss two to four weeks. Because the Redskins have a bye this weekend, Norman might be able to return for the Oct. 15 game vs. the San Francisco 49ers. The worst-case scenario would have Norman missing not only the 49ers game, but subsequent contests vs. the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys.

In the first three games of the season, Norman had three defended passes and 11 total tackles to go with two forced fumbles.
