The Washington Redskins listed Colt McCoy as their starting quarterback in their preseason depth chart, but his job is far from safe. As Case Keenum and Dwayne Haskins practice, McCoy isn't and didn't play in their Week 1 preseason game versus the Cleveland Browns. Now, he won't be playing in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday.

Keenum watched Wednesday's walkthrough as he deals with lingering leg soreness. Head coach Jay Gruden announced on Wednesday that McCoy would not play Thursday, as he said via the Washington Post‘s Kareem Copeland,

“First and foremost we’ve got to get that leg healthy,” Gruden said. “Where he’s confident and he can step into some throws and really push off that leg. Right now you can see it’s been a little bit of an issue for him. I don’t think it’s very far away… It’s the same thing. I don’t think he’s had full strength yet. He’s tried to battle through it. It just hasn’t been there for him.”

As of now, Keenum will start with Haskins backing him up. As the regular season nears, it's appearing more and more likely that McCoy won't be the starter, considering the time missed in training camp and preseason. While Haskins may be the long-term answer at the position, he's got some developing to do. Plus, Washington may not like the idea of playing him behind a Trent Williams-less offensive line.

In 2018, McCoy filled in for Alex Smith after he suffered a gruesome leg injury mid-season. He played three games, starting two, and tallied 372 yards and three touchdowns to three interceptions on a 63% completion rate in the process. This season will be his fifth year in Washington.
