Heading into tonight's Thursday Night Football clash became the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys, it didn't appear that Redskins starting left tackle Trent Williams would be able to play as he continues to recover from a knee injury.

However, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Williams is in fact going to try to play tonight:

Redskins coach Jay Gruden told Jane Slater they are at the mercy of how LT Trent Williams (knee) feels. I’m told he IS planning to play tonight, somehow. Gruden has called his knee injury something most players couldn't play through.

Given Washington's slim postseason odds at 5-6 in a highly competitive NFC playoff race, beating the Cowboys tonight is vital to keeping their hopes alive. And, a productive Trent Williams is crucial to protecting Kirk Cousins against Dallas' pass rush.

As head coach Jay Gruden noted, most players wouldn't be able to take the field with a knee injury like Trent's, which will require surgery once the season comes to an end. After playing every snap against the New Orleans Saints in Week 11, Williams missed Washington's Thanksgiving game against the New York Giants. The Redskins ultimately won, but the Giants were able to get pressure on Cousins and contain their offense until the fourth quarter.

Williams has been tremendous this season protecting Cousins' blind side. According to ProFootballTalk's Charean Williams, the five-time Pro Bowler out of Oklahoma only has two holding penalties this year while allowing just one sack in eight games.
