The Washington Redskins are officially in search of a starting left tackle after trading Trent Williams to the San Francisco 49ers.

Williams sat out the entirety of the 2019 season, anyway, but replacement tackles Ereck Flowers and Donald Penn are both gone. As such, the Redskins are on the lookout for options to protect Dwayne Haskins' blindside.

Redskins head coach Ron Rivera said the team lucked into selecting LSU's Saahdiq Charles in the fourth round, and also noted the team might be scouring the free-agent market (via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk):

Rivera said on The Team 980 that the team was “very fortunate” to land Charles, but that they have other options that they’re exploring as well.

“There’s still a couple guys out there that we’ve talked about,” Rivera said, via NBCSportsWashington.com.

There are not a whole lot of options at the left tackle spot in terms of free agents.

Longtime Philadelphia Eagles standout Jason Peters is still available, however. The Eagles and Peters' camp agreed to let the veteran pursue a new contract, though he remains unsigned.

Peters is still one of the best offensive tackles in football. In fact, he had the sixth-highest grade at the position in 2019, per Pro Football Focus.

Then again, perhaps the Redskins would be more comfortable giving Charles the chance to land the starting job. Washington has made some shrewd moves this offseason, and they are also hoping Chase Young can have a transformative impact on the defense.

However, the Redskins are still rebuilding. Letting Charles have a trial run might be the best way of determining his future at the position protecting a young quarterback in Haskins.
