The New Orleans Saints are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2021 season. Unfortunately for the Saints, there's one key area of uncertainty surrounding the team as they head into the offseason. Head coach Sean Payton has been mulling his future with the franchise, and the latest update from Saints' owner Gayle Benson won't do much to encourage fans. Benson told reporters on Monday that Payton's future with the franchise remains up in the air, per Sean Fazende.

Benson attempted to laugh off the question regarding Payton's future in New Orleans, saying “We don't know, you know? Who knows? We'll find out soon enough, I guess. I don't think any of us know. But he'll let us know soon enough.”

That statement from Benson certainly didn't sound like someone who was overly confident about keeping Payton in his current role. The Saints' coach has been linked with a potential jump to the broadcast booth, with FOX rumored to be interested in the 58-year-old.

The Saints will need to address the quarterback position in order to get back to contender status, but whether or not Payton has the patience for a potential rebuild or re-tooling remains to be seen. The veteran coach could call it quits after the 2021 season and opt for a fresh start in broadcasting, or even just retire.

It seems that Benson and the rest of the Saints are just as unclear on Payton's plans as the rest of us, but Benson's comments didn't do much to suggest that the head coach was leaning towards a return to the team.
