After trading a player they just signed this offseason in Adrian Peterson to the Arizona Cardinals for a conditional sixth-round pick, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton described the move as “common sense,” Josh Katzenstein of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

“This was done just using common sense, and we had a chance to get a draft pick next year,” Payton said. “I know Arizona was short at this position, and there’s a confidence level we have with how Mark and how Alvin are playing.”

On one hand, it made all sense in the world for the Saints to let Peterson go. He clearly didn’t have a defined role in the offense Payton wanted to run, while Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara have shown they can thrive in the system. And now, he goes to a team in the Cardinals that’s in desperate need of his talent.

But, on the other hand, where was this common sense Payton was talking about when the Saints decided to take on an aging veteran running back who was a nonfactor in the receiving game when they already had two other capable backs?

Peterson's in the past now, though, and the Saints at least came away with some kind of asset to help mitigate the mistake they made in the first place.
