The Philadelphia 76ers have shockingly cut veteran big man Montrezl Harrell on the eve of the 2023-24 NBA season. The Sixers made the roster move as Harrell is still recovering from a knee injury and won’t be ready to contribute at the outset of the new campaign.

“The Philadelphia 76ers are waiving center Montrezl Harrell, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium, Shams Charania reported Monday. “Harrell’s ACL/meniscus injury and absence make him the release due to a roster crunch, but he’s aiming to make a return after the All-Star break.”

Just because the Sixers cut Harrell doesn’t mean the forward won’t be back with the team at some point during the 2023-24 season. In fact, Charania also notes that the “76ers will continue supporting Harrell in his rehab and recovery plan, sources said.”

Montrezl Harrell is an eight-year NBA vet who has played for six NBA teams — the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, Charlotte Hornets, and Sixers — after the Rockets selected him in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft out of Louisville.

Over the course of his career, Harrell, an undersized center at 6-foot-7, has averaged 20.5 minutes, 12.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. His biggest contributions don’t show up on a stat sheet, though. The North Carolina native has brought an incredible amount of toughness, effort, and defensive skill to every team he’s been on.

Harrell signed a one-plus-one deal to get on the Sixers' roster last offseason, opted out this offseason, and re-signed on another one-year deal. He then injured his knee (announced on August 2, 2023) while preparing for the new NBA season.
