The Sixers will reportedly move quickly to keep Tobias Harris this summer, no matter the situation with Jimmy Butler, according to Sean Deveney of Sporting News.
Both Harris and Butler will be unrestricted free agents this summer and command max money.
According to a source with knowledge of the situation, there is “almost no chance” things play out this way. The reason the Sixers were willing to give up four picks and Shamet last month was because they felt that having Harris’ Bird Rights would give them the needed edge to make sure he re-signed. Philadelphia won’t be outbid for Harris this summer.
Harris is ready for some long-term stability. He’s been shipped from Milwaukee to Orlando to Detroit to the Clippers and now to the Sixers, and he is still only 26 (he turns 27 in July). The expectation is that the team will move quickly to keep Harris, no matter the situation with Butler.
The Sixers acquired Butler from the Minnesota Timberwolves in November and Harris from the LA Clippers at the February trade deadline.
Philly is in third place in the Eastern Conference standings entering Friday.
With Butler and Harris in the mix alongside Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid and J.J. Redick, many believe the Sixers have a good chance to get to the NBA Finals. However, that doesn’t guarantee Butler wants to be back in Philly.
As for Harris, he’s been traded four times now, so he wants to settle down somewhere.
