News broke Thursday that the San Antonio Spurs were trading Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks. In exchange, the Spurs received Danilo Gallinari, three first-round draft picks, and a draft swap. This trade undoubtedly gives Murray a better opportunity to capitalize on the peak of his career, which is something both he and the Spurs value.

“They [Spurs] didn't want to see me waste years rebuilding and stuff,” Murray told reporters at his introductory press conference in Atlanta (per Spurs sportswriter Tom Orsborn). “They want to see me win and the best for Dejounte, and I thank them for that a lot. That's what makes our relationship special and family forever.”

The Spurs selected Murray 29th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft. Since then, the team hasn't had any major success and hasn't been to the NBA Playoffs in three years. Despite the lack of success for his team, Murray has continued to display his talent.

He led the Spurs in points and assists per game, averaging 21.1 points, 9.2 assists, and 8.3 rebounds this season. Along with being the league's steal leader for 2022, Murray participated in his first-ever NBA All-Star Game.

The 25-year-old guard has the opportunity to team up with stars like De'Andre Hunter and Trae Young for the upcoming season. And, Murray isn't the only new kid in town. The Hawks have been extremely busy making trades and free agency signings. Murray joins the team with a ton of other acquisitions, including Justin Holiday and Mo Harkless from their Kevin Huerter trade with the Sacramento Kings.
