The San Antonio Spurs signed Josh Huestis to an Exhibit 10 contract a couple of days ago just to waive the 6-foot-7 forward on Thursday. But Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News says that Huestis is still on the Spurs' radar and is expected to log minutes for the G League's Austin Spurs.

The Spurs have waived newly inked forward Josh Huestis, a housekeeping move meant to clear the runway for him to land with the G-League Austin Spurs.

The four-year man out of Stanford was the 29th pick of the 2014 draft. He came into the league with an NBA-ready body and an expectation to be an excellent lockdown defender for the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 2014, Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress pegged Huestis as a potential defensive anchor.

The best thing that Huestis brings to the table, and the key attribute that makes him a NBA prospect, is his defense. His size, length and athleticism gives him the ability to guard multiple positions at the college level and beyond, and he shows terrific smarts and intensity locking down opponents. Even though he's a bit upright in his stance at times, Huestis' strong base helps him keep quicker opponents in front of him, while his length and activity level makes him very effective at contesting shots.

Huestis was also one of the NBA players who willingly opened up about mental health and balancing his basketball career with other important life facets.

The 26-year-old small forward should have more chances to improve now that he is in the Spurs' system.
