Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict was up to his usual tricks once again on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Burfict delivered some rough hits, including one on Steelers star wideout Antonio Brown’s head using his elbow.

Unsurprisingly, the Steelers are not thrilled with Burfict for his actions. Right tackle Marcus Gilbert, in particular, called the Bengals star “pathetic” for that dangerous hit to Brown's head. He also challenged the NFL to suspend Burfict for that dirty play.

“That's pathetic. The NFL has to do something about that,” Gilbert said per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. “A guy like that, going out there intentionally trying to hurt people, there's no need for that kind of playing in this league. It's sad. One of these days he'll grow up.”

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the league is reviewing three of Burfict’s plays against the Steelers, including the one on Brown. However, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the league is not expected to suspend the Bengals linebacker and will likely just fine him as punishment.

It goes without saying that a mere fine won’t satisfy the Steelers. They want a more severe punishment for Burfict, who does have a history with this sort of untoward behavior.

It’s now up to the league to do their part in curbing this sort of play. If they truly are committed to the safety of their players, then they must send a strong message that dangerous plays like Burfict’s elbow on Brown are simply unacceptable and will be punished with stiff penalties.
