The Tennessee Titans are having problems with the health of their quarterbacks with Marcus Mariota and Blaine Gabbert each nursing injuries, which necessitated the team to add depth behind the two by signing veteran signal-caller Austin Davis, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

The #Titans are signing free agent QB Austin Davis, source said. Some veteran insurance with Blaine Gabbert in the concussion protocol and Marcus Mariota still nursing that elbow injury.

Mariota hasn’t been 100 percent since hurting his elbow during Week 1’s 27-20 road loss to the Miami Dolphins. The former Oregon Duck gunslinger missed Week 2’s 20-17 home win over the Houston Texans, but made an appearance last Sunday when he was forced to step in for a concussed Blaine Gabbert. Mariota completed 12 of 18 passes for 1010 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars and added 51 rushing yards on seven carries in a 9-6 road victory.

Although the fact that he played in Jacksonville was a good sign, Mariota is still being limited by his injury. Gabbert, meanwhile, is still in the concussion protocol as of this writing, so his availability for Week 4’s showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles remains up in the air.

The injuries to their quarterbacks have forced the Titans to be incredibly dependent on their running game. The Titans attempted just 21 passes against the Jags and are currently last in the NFL in passing play percentage. Conversely, they are first in the NFL in rushing play percentage.

Austin Davis played three games last year as Russell Wilson’s backup with the Seattle Seahawks. He has 2,548 passing yards and 13 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 16 games so far in his pro career.
