Uruguay was solid in their first match. They scored in the 16th minute and then stifled Panama. They did not allow a quality chance on goal the rest of the first half and most of the second. While Panama was pressing in the second half, Darwin Nunez would score to make it 2-0, and Uruguay would go on to win the game 3-1. Meanwhile, Bolivia struggled against the United States. They would allow a goal in the third minute of play, and they would end up with just three total shots on goal.

Why Uruguay Will Win

Uruguay has not played much in the 2024 calendar year. They have played in just two international friendlies, but the two friendlies have given an idea of what this offense is going to be. Darwin Nunez led them in the competition, scoring three goals in just 68 minutes in one appearance in the friendlies. In six World Cup qualifying matches in 2023, he was also dominant. Nunez scored five goals, plus two assists. He averaged 1.38 goals plus assists tots for every 90 minutes of action. He continued that in the first game of the tournament. Nunez has a goal on an expected goal total of 0.9 in the first game.

For Uruguay, while the main scoring option is Nunez, the midfield does a lot of the work to get Nunez into those positions. Much of that comes from Nicholas De La Cruz. He has played in just 45 minutes of friendlies this calendar year and did not do much in that time, but in World Cup Qualifying, he was a primary part of the offensive attack. He scored three times, as the top option beyond Nunez, but he also had three assists. De La Cruz added an assist in the first game of this tournament.  Further, Matias VIna was great in the first game. He has an expected point total, being goals plus assists, of just .2, but he came away with a goal and an assist.

Sergio Rochet is expected to be in goal for Uruguay. He allowed just three goals on nine shots in five games in qualifying. He was solid in the first game, with two games and one goal allowed.

Why Bolivia Will Win

Bolivia has struggled in non-friendly international play as of late and continued to struggle in their first match of the tournament. The major issue for Bolivia has been scoring goals. In six World Cup qualifying matches, they scored just four goals, with two of them coming in the victory over Peru. The lack of goal-scoring is accentuated by their statistics in the Gold Coast. Rodrigo Ramallo created the most chances in the Gold Cup with three of them. He made two progressive passes in the first game, which was the second most on the team.

The most pressure came from Miguel Terceros, the midfielder who came in as a sub. He had an expected goal total of .1 in the game and was the only player with a non-zero expected goal total. Still, there was some positive from Bolivia. Three of the top four players on progressive passes and progressive dribbles, meaning moving the ball quickly upfield, were all on the defensive end of the pitch. If they can get one counter, they could find a way to score in this one.

Guillermo Vizcarra should be in goal for Bolivia. In Word Cup Qualifying. He was solid in his games, but not great. He allowed 14 goals in those games on 33 shots on target. That gave him an ave percentage of 57.6. Still, his only win was in the one clean sheet he had. In that match, he faced just two shots on target. Vizcarra was solid in his first game, stopping six of eight shots.

Final Uruguay-Bolivia Prediction & Pick

For as much as Uruguay dominated Pnamaa, they have an expected goal differential of just under one goal. Bolivia has an expected goal differential of negative 2.33. Uruguay is better than the United States, so this should be domination. Still, laying -750 is not the best move. Expect Uruguay to score at least three and the over-hitting.
