In the third quarter of the Minnesota Vikings' matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, star running back Dalvin Cook suffered a shoulder injury. The team announced that the third-year back has been ruled out for the rest of the game.

Before the injury, Cook carried the ball nine times for 27 yards and caught three balls for an additional 16 yards. The former Florida State star has struggled with injuries since entering the league in 2017. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound back played only four games his rookie year, 11 in his second year, and was questionable to play on Sunday with a chest injury.

2019 has served as a breakout year for the former second-round pick. In 13 games, Cook has 241 rushes for 1.108 yards and 13 touchdowns while also acting as a threat in the receiving end with 50 receptions for 503 yards.

The Vikings running back is one of just nine players to have rushed for over 1,000 yards so far this season. His 13 rushing touchdowns are tied for the best mark in the NFL.

No further updates have been posted about Cook's injury, but the 9-4 Vikings will likely need their star rusher if they want to make a run in the playoffs.

Replacing Cook, Minnesota will use a combination of rookie Alexander Mattison, Ameer Abdullah and second-year back Mike Boone.

With the 11-3 Packers still at the top of the NFC North, the Vikings are fighting for a wildcard spot. The Chicago Bears at 7-7 are also still in the hunt for the division. Next game, the Vikings will return home as they take on Green Bay.
