The Washington Football Team might have found its 2021 starting quarterback, signing veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick to a one-year, $10 million deal on Monday night.

Washington is certainly in need of a long-term answer at quarterback after Dwayne Haskins turned into a bust, but for the 2021 season, Fitzpatrick could be a temporary solution under center.

Fitzpatrick showed in 2020 that he can still sling the rock with the Miami Dolphins. Washington brass noticed this. His veteran presence and overall competence showed that while he is not an elite NFL starting quarterback, he is not a bad one, either. Merely being decent — on a team with an improving defense and an amazingly productive special teams unit — carried the Dolphins a long way. Fitz put Miami in position to succeed, and he also mentored Tua Tagovailoa to give coach Brian Flores an added — if unofficial — assistant coach on the staff.

Washington could have done a lot worse than Fitzpatrick as a temporary solution at quarterback while it looks at the future and considers a draft pick with upside.

It will be fascinating to see how well Fitzpatrick matches up with Dak Prescott when Washington meets the archrival Dallas Cowboys.
