The Phoenix Mercury are making waves after losing to the Chicago Sky in the WNBA Finals last season. Not long after acquiring Diamond DeShields from the Sky in a three-team deal, the Mercury signed Tina Charles, the top scorer in the WNBA in 2021.

These are some massive moves for an already loaded roster that features Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner and Skylar Diggins-Smith. The Mercury are putting the WNBA on notice and will be a top title contender once again under new head coach Vanessa Nygaard, who's taking over for Sandy Brondello.

Phoenix acquired DeShields from Chicago in a sign-and-trade deal in WNBA free agency. The Mercury sent a 2023 first-round pick to the Sky, and they also dealt Bria Hartley and a pair of second-round picks to the Indiana Fever. Chicago got Julie Allemand while also sending out a pair of first-round picks.

DeShields played a key role in the Sky's championship run last season, which culminated in the WNBA Finals victory over Phoenix. She averaged 11.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 2021. She was an All-Star in 2019.

Charles played last season with the Washington Mystics after a lengthy stint with the New York Liberty. She put up 23.4 points per game while shooting 44.9% from the field and 36.5% from 3-point range. She also pulled down 9.6 rebounds and handed out 2.1 assists per game.

The 33-year-old is an eight-time WNBA All-Star who clearly still has a lot left in the tank after her career-high scoring season. The Phoenix Mercury are going to be a lot of fun to watch with all this talent in place in 2022.
