The New York Yankees' swift demise in the playoffs was a fitting ending for a very disappointing season. They have to make a lot of moves to contend now with Aaron Judge's contract expiration looming.

The Evil Empire hasn't made any serious splashes yet, likey because they aren't ready to run the risk of surrendering a top prospect. According to Andy Martino of SNY, the Yankees couldn't trade for Oakland A's star Matt Olson prior to the lockout because they did not want to give up their top prospect.

Anthony Volpe, a 20-year-old shortstop, has shown tremendous potential in the low level of the minor leagues. In 2021, he played recorded 121 hits and 27 home runs while posting a slash line of .294/.423/.604 in 109 games. The Yankees would be very wise to call him up to the big leagues soon, as they have a dire need at shortstop.

Olson, meanwhile, was a 2021 All-Star and hit 39 home runs in 156 games with a slash line of .271/.371/.540 for Oakland. The two-time Gold Glove-winning first baseman would also fill a need for New York. Since the Yankees need to contend now, they should be willing to part with the youngster for the 27-year-old All-Star. Although the trade might be somewhat lopsided, the Yankees don't have time to waste. Their window to contend is right now.

If the Yankees won't move Volpe for one of the best hitters in the game, they need to call up their prized prospect and let him get MLB experience. It's a possibility, but not a very strong likelihood right now. Toiling in the middle ground — refusing to give up a top prospect but not looking to get him to the major ASAP — does them no favors.
