The 2022 NFL free agency period is about to begin which means it's time to look at two players the New York Jets should avoid completely. There are numerous holes on this roster, but the front office is equipped with a ton of cap space and draft picks. If they do it right, we should see this team make improvements next season.

There is a long list of issues with this team but the secondary is desperate for attention. We should see the front office attempt to sign some defensive backs and safetys, as the pass coverage was one of the worst in the league. However, there is one veteran the Jets should avoid at all costs.

On the other side of the ball, the Jets are in dire need of a consistent tight end. However, it wouldn't make sense for this team to go after a veteran in his prime (or just outside of it) right now. They're bound to sign someone in free agency, but New York should focus on acquiring talented young players to the roster instead.

With that said, here are two players the New York Jets should avoid in the 2022 NFL free agency.

2 Jets Free Agents To Avoid

2. Devin McCourty

Although Devin McCourty has been extremely successful throughout his career, he should not be a free agent target for the Jets. He'd likely help quite a bit, but New York doesn't need to add a player who will be 35 by the time the season starts.

The Jets are still very much in rebuild mode and it makes more sense for this team to continue adding youth to both sides of the ball. McCourty would bring value as a veteran leader, but his age limits his potential for the remainder of his career.

Although safety is a huge need for New York, the front office will have other options on the table. Tyrann Mathieu is expected to hit free agency, which could be a splash signing for this franchise. Additionally, the Jets are in line to select some elite talent through the NFL Draft and they could select a future superstar in April. Look for this team to go that route rather than signing an aging veteran.

1. Zach Ertz

Another veteran the Jets could potentially target is Zach Ertz. He'd be another player that makes tremendous sense for New York, however, the front office should look elsewhere. Additionally, Ertz will likely be more interested in playing for a contender considering he's 31 years old and just now leaving the prime of his career.

The Jets desperately need a tight end, but Zach Ertz is just the wrong guy for the job. If he was several years younger, then he'd be a prime candidate for this franchise. With New York looking to add youth, signing Ertz in free agency just wouldn't be a smart move for this front office.

Other potential options for the Jets are Mike Gesicki or Dalton Schultz. We'll see if they enter the 2022 NFL free agency pool, as it's rumored they'll both receive a franchise tag to remain with their respective teams. Additionally, this year's draft class is loaded with talented tight ends and New York could find a legitimate option in rounds two or later. We'll see how it plays out, but the front office should aim for youth and potential over veteran players for now.
