Bryn Forbes has opted out of his $2.45 million player option with the Milwaukee Bucks for the 2021-22 NBA season, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Forbes spent the first four seasons of his career with the San Antonio Spurs before signing with the Bucks last offseason.

Across 70 appearances in the regular season, Forbes produced 10.0 points per contest and shot a career-best 45.2 percent on 3-pointers. The 6-foot-2 guard delivered two monster playoff outings in the first round against the Miami Heat. He drained six 3-pointers in Game 2 and seven treys in Game 4, helping the Bucks complete a sweep.

Despite a great showing in the opening round, Forbes eventually lost a spot in the rotation. He received three DNP-CDs in the NBA Finals against the Phoenix Suns.

Now an NBA champion, what will the market look like for Forbes? Despite posting the fourth-highest 3-point shooting percentage across the league, his defensive struggles and lack of playmaking could deter some teams from giving the 28-year-old guard a multiyear contract. He ranked 110th out of 116 among shooting guards in ESPN's Defensive Real Plus-Minus. As a facilitator, he had the second-lowest assist rate among guards (1,000 minutes played minimum), according to StatHead.

Still, Forbes is one of the game’s best shooters, so a team in need of floor spacing will ultimately target him in free agency. The Bucks are unlikely to retain the guard. The cap-strapped Bucks can only offer a 20% raise on his previous salary (because they only have his Non-Bird rights), unless they offer part of the mid-level exception, which is highly doubtful.

With a return to Milwaukee likely off the table, let’s look at three teams that could ink Bryn Forbes in free agency.

3. Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies must find 3-point shooting help. They ranked 25th in the league with 11 3-pointers made per 100 possessions. Overall, they finished 20th in 3-point percentage in 2020-21. And while they acquired Eric Bledsoe in a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans, the guard is reportedly expected to be traded elsewhere this offseason.

Looking for a backup guard in free agency, the shooting-needy Grizzlies could sign Bryn Forbes. The Grizzlies lack volume shooters from 3-point territory, something Forbes could certainly aid. 64.5 percent of his field goal attempts were from 3-point land this past season. Forbes would prove worthy as a catch-and-shoot option for Ja Morant to pass to when attacking the basket.

2. New York Knicks

The New York Knicks have ample cap space to sign multiple free agents. After finishing with the eighth-worst offense across the NBA, the Knicks should target offensive-minded players. Bryn Forbes could be a great piece off the bench for New York, which finished 23rd in true shooting percentage.

Forbes produced his best true shooting percentage (63.1) of his career with the Bucks in 2020-21. He would prove valuable to the Knicks, who ranked 21st in the NBA with 11.7 triples made per contest.

1. New Orleans Pelicans

One of the reasons the Pelicans sent away Steven Adams in the aforementioned trade was to open up floor space. Adams clogged up the inside too often, which was disadvantageous to star Zion Williamson when he drove the lane.

3-point specialists will create more space for Williamson to operate. The Pelicans hit the fourth-fewest 3-pointers per game (10.6) and finished 26th in 3-point percentage (34.8). They could sorely use a player like Bryn Forbes, who buried 2.2 3-pointers per contest in 2020-21.
