Jimmy Garoppolo's future with the San Francisco 49ers has been under question since the team traded up in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Trey Lance with the third overall pick. Garoppolo did well to tune out the noise and focus on football, leading the Niners to an NFC Championship appearance despite the constant chatter about his future with the organization. Well, speaking to the media on Tuesday, Garoppolo was talking as if he knew a trade was on the horizon. Via Cam Inman, Garoppolo didn't hold back when discussing his conversations with GM John Lynch, including talks of the possibility of trade.

Garoppolo acknowledged that his future with the Niners is clouded, and revealed that he and Lynch had discussed potential trade destinations in their chat on Monday. Garoppolo said he wants to “go to a place where they want to win,” indicating that he's looking to be dealt to a competitive team, if he's traded at all.

The tone used by Garoppolo throughout his address was certainly more depictive of a player set to part ways with the franchise, as opposed to someone who is optimistic he'll be back next year.

With Lance waiting in the wings for his chance to step in and take over as the 49ers starting quarterback, Garoppolo's comments suggest he's come to terms with the fact that his days in The Bay are likely numbered.

In 2021, Jimmy G. completed 68.3% of his pass attempts for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. During the Niners' playoff run, Garoppolo threw two touchdown passes and three picks across three games, leading the team as far as the NFC Championship. It's not often a team moves on from its quarterback after a deep playoff run, but that may be the case for Garoppolo and the Niners.
