The San Francisco 49ers managed to defy expectations by making it all the way to Super Bowl LIV. It appears they will no longer be sneaking up on anybody in the 2020 NFL season.

The 49ers led quite the resurgence in the 2019 NFL season. According to BetOnline.ag, they are expected to keep it going after being projected to be the NFC's winningest team next year, via Chris Burke of The Athletic:

Top NFC numbers: SF (10.5), New Orleans (10), Philadelphia (10)

It is safe to say that very few pegged San Francisco as bonafide championship contenders prior to the 2019 campaign. After all, they were still coming off back-to-back losing seasons since the arrival of head coach Kyle Shanahan. Fortunately, this proved to be the year that they were able to put it all together by securing the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

Although the 49ers may have fallen short this time, they have clearly managed to turn their fortunes around. More importantly, they seemingly managed to establish a winning blueprint in the process by featuring a strong run game to pair with their formidable defense. The onus will now fall on Shanahan to find a way to make it work on a yearly basis.

While San Francisco boasts no shortage of talent on either side of the ball, they should still have their work cut out trying to repeat as the best regular season team in the NFC.

The biggest challenge lies in their very own division with the Seattle Seahawks coming off another playoff appearance and the Los Angeles Rams hoping to get back into the postseason next year.
