The San Francisco 49ers will not pick up the option on guard Joshua Garnett, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network,

As decisions on fifth-year options for 2016 first-rounders go, this one might be one the least shocking.

Garnett, one of the last mistakes of the Chip Kelly era, hasn’t started a game since his rookie season. He missed all of 2017 after knee surgery, and only saw action as a reserve in seven games last year.

He has been declared healthy now, and they’ve tried to talk up his value entering the offseason, but they weren’t prepared to invest in a contract for 2020 on him.

Time will tell if Garnett gets one last shot to prove himself. He only played 59 snaps in 2018. Mike Person, who was signed on a one-year deal the summer of 2018, played 999 snaps. The two will compete for a starting spot at right guard during camp.

Around the league, there have been quite a few teams that are not exercising their first round picks fifth-year option, either, including Jack Conklin of the Tennessee Titans, and Jets linebacker Darron Lee.

Garnett was drafted by the previous regime in San Francisco. If John Lynch is going to be successful in San Francisco, he will have to learn from that regime's mistakes.
