The Aaron Rodgers trade buzz has died down for the time being. But it wasn't too long ago that his exit from Green Bay seemed all but certain. His top choice is reportedly the very team the Packers are facing in Week 3 – the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers were said to be a “key figure” in trying to convince Aaron Rodgers to leave the Packers, according to the latest report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport:

Sources say that the 49ers were Rodgers' top choice when it came to a new destination. And when the 49ers made their phone call to coach Matt LaFleur, it was done because they got word that Rodgers was more than into it.

Interestingly enough, Rodgers was asked about the rumored link between him and the 49ers during the offseason. The Packers star didn't confirm the news, but he didn't exactly deny them either.

“There were points where I thought anything was possible,” Rodgers said this week. “Definitely. But not a strong possibility.”

In all likelihood, Aaron Rodgers is probably keeping mum on the idea, whether true or not, because the Packers have zero to gain from it at the moment. He's made the commitment to try and separate his off-field drama with the on-field product, and saying anything controversial would definitely breach that.

One thing's for sure – Aaron Rodgers is going to try and make the San Francisco 49ers wish they traded for him as they face off in Week 3.
