The Alabama Crimson Tide surprised the college football world Saturday, defeating the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship, 41-24. However, in the win the Crimson Tide lost their star wide receiver John Metchie III for the rest of the season. Head coach Nick Saban announced Sunday that Metchie tore his ACL and will be not be available going forward.

Alabama entered Saturday's title game as an underdog, something Saban and the Crimson Tide were not accustomed to. They used that as fuel, soundly defeating the previously unbeaten Georgia Bulldogs.

In the win, Metchie III had six catches for 97 yards and a touchdown prior to tearing his ACL. Metchie III was having a huge first half, but late in the half while turning back on a route, he knee appeared to buckle. The initial fear has now been confirmed, leaving the Crimson Tide short handed for the college football playoff.

The College Football Playoff committee placed a significant amount of value in Alabama's win. They jumped from number three to number one in the final college football rankings.

Alabama is set to face another undefeated team in the Cincinnati Bearcats in the first game of the College Football Playoff.

Meanwhile, the other half of the bracket sees the aforementioned Georgia Bulldogs taking on the Michigan Wolverines.

Metchie III was having a breakout junior season for the Crimson Tide. The Alabama junior finished the season with 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns. In his absence, fellow junior wideout Jameson Williams will take an ever larger role in the passing game.
