The only question about this game is Argentina’s motivation to put their best squad on the field. Argentina could give up the top spot in the group if Canada beats Chile and tops Argentina in goal differential. Canada currently has an even goal differential, while Argentina is +2, so at the least, Canada would tie them in this scenario, and then it comes down to the rest of the tiebreakers. Argentina will likely bank on Canada not winning their last group-stage game and hope their B effort can outlast Peru to at least get a draw. It is time to continue our Copa America odds series with an Argentina-Peru prediction, pick, and how-to-watch.

Argentina almost played themselves into an unfavorable position with their game against Chile. The game remained scoreless until the 88th minute when Lautaro Martinez broke the deadlock and put Argentina first in the group. A scoreless draw for Argentina in their previous match could’ve put them in a must-win scenario in this game.

Peru was left with a sour taste in their mouths after the 1-0 loss to Canada. Peru was the better team, out-shooting, out-chancing, and out-possessing Canada, despite playing with ten men for the last 30 minutes. The problem for Peru is that a win won’t necessarily grant them advancement into the knockout stage, as they also need Chile to beat Canada and then beat Chile in a possible tiebreaker.

Why Argentina Will Win

Peru doesn’t have a lot of finish in their game, as they have eight shots on goal over two games but haven’t been able to find the back of the net. Peru has been playing a passive, defensive game to try and limit their opponents’ chances, but they need a win in this game which could leave them susceptible to the Argentinian attack.

Argentina’s attack hasn’t been great either, so they may want to bear down in this game and get it back on track before they face a better team in the knockout stage.

Why Peru Will Win

The chance is there for Peru to put themselves in contention to advance to the knockout stage. Plenty of things need to happen for that to come true, but the first domino to fall needs to be a victory. Peru gets the benefit of a semi-unmotivated Argentina team and needs to figure out how to score their first goal of the tournament and play steady defense.

Final Argentina-Peru Prediction & Pick

Peru’s defense is already above-average, but the prospect of them playing an Argentina team that won’t have much motivation and may rest some of their stars makes it possible that there won’t be many goals in this game. Peru hasn’t scored a goal yet in this tournament, and they have only eight shots on goal through their first two games.

Argentina dominated against Canada but only scored two goals against a lesser defense. If Peru scores a goal and Argentina scores two, then we’ll deal with the loss, but it feels like a game where a lifeless Argentina squad takes a 0-0 draw and lives to fight in the knockout stage. If Argentina does win this game, it could easily be a 1-0 or 2-0 score.
