Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon is still not out of the woods just yet, as he has yet to clear concussion protocol, which he needs to do in order to be allowed back on the field for Week 15’s showdown with the Minnesota Vikings.

This is according to Jim Owczarski of Cincinnati.com, who also said that Mixon has been seen on the practice field.

Mixon sustained a concussion back in Week 13’s 23-20 home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mixon was taken out of the second quarter of that game and didn’t return after rushing for just 34 yards on seven carries.

Mixon then missed the match against the Chicago Bears in Week 14, which resulted in a 33-7 loss. Without Mixon on the field, the Bengals failed to hit their already modest rushing average of 79.4 yards per game – second worst in the NFL – as they burned rubber for only 70 yards on the ground against the Bears.

Giovani Bernard acted as Cincy’s starter in the backfield versus Chicago, but wasn’t entirely effective, rushing for only 62 yards on 11 carries. Bernard will most likely be the featured tailback for the Bengals against the Vikings in case Mixon gets ruled out again.

Mixon paces the Bengals in carries (157), rushing yards (518), and has scored all of the team’s four rushing touchdowns this season.
