Stephen A Smith dropped a bombshell on Thursday. He dropped some tidbits regarding Donald Trump's attempt to buy the Buffalo Bills back in 2014. However, the NFL apparently denied his offer, which supposedly led Trump to run for president. It's unclear whether or not this is true, but considering Smith's legitimacy as a sports analyst, it's hard to imagine he's making this story up.

According to Audacy, Stephen A Smith claims, “Trump, who was one of three finalists in bidding for the Bills, vowed to run for president and ‘get back' at the NFL's club owners if he weren't able to purchase the team.” Smith provides a full quote of what the former US President told him back in 2014:

“In 2014, Donald Trump wanted to purchase the Buffalo Bills. And when he wanted to purchase the Bills — this was before he ever decided to run for president — Donald Trump called yours truly. And he said he wanted to purchase the Bills. And I'll never forget what he said to me. He said, ‘if those owners screw me over' — and I'm just using the FCC-allowable version, because he didn't say it like that, but I'm paraphrasing. He said, ‘if they screw me over, I'm going to show them. I'm going to get them all back. I'm going to run for president of the United States,” Stephen A Smith on First Take.

If this is true, then Donald Trump went out of his way to become president simply out of pettiness because he lost the bidding war for the Bills. While sitting as president of the USA, Trump routinely emphasized Colin Kaepernick's peaceful protest of kneeling during the National Anthem. However, Smith claims, “It wasn't about Colin Kaepernick. It was [Trump] politicizing the situation for his own benefit, to cause havoc for NFL owners who had ‘screwed him over' from becoming an NFL owner and being a part of their club,” per Audacy.

Donald Trump will likely deny this ever happened. Regardless, the league is probably better off not having him involved as the controlling owner of the Bills.
