Brendan Schaub had a strange exit from the UFC that is still misunderstood today. Some think he left to do comedy, others think he just wanted to stop fighting.

The real story is that Brendan Schaub was preparing to drop down to light heavyweight but eventually retired after being against the Reebok deal from 2015. Today he revealed what the UFC's reaction was to him leaving the promotion.

“I don’t know when these guys are gonna realise – this is a business,” Schaub said on Below The Belt. It is a cutthroat business. Professional sports? It is cut-fucking-throat. UFC, NBA, MLB, it’s all like this, man. A lot are like this, unless you’re a big time dude, tip of the spear guy that was winning a million fights for them and making them all this money. When I retired, and I’d say I did pretty well in the UFC, when I retired I got an email that said ‘cool, just so you know if you ever come back we still own your ass’. It’s like, cool man, yeah, that’s all I got.”

“I was complaining about the Reebok deal and throwing shade at Dana so I didn’t expect much, but I got an email, man.”

Brendan Schaub has found much more success outside of MMA with podcasting and comedy. He has always been very vocal about the way the UFC does business and why he doesn't like it.

Kevin Lee's release from the UFC last week was a good example of the ugly side of the game. Fighters can learn a lot from Brendan Schaub and the way he managed his career post-UFC.
