The Denver Broncos made a bit of a splash with the selection of former Missouri quarterback Drew Lock. General manager John Elway has made it clear that he will be the successor to quarterback Joe Flacco.

The Broncos have now answered all speculation about their future plans under center this offseason. According to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, Elway plans to take his time developing Lock behind Flacco:

“I’m hoping that it allows us to let him grow,” Elway said. “The expectation is not as high as it would be with a top-10 pick. That’s what he needs. He’s going to need that time and the patience and continue to work with it. He’s going to be able to watch Joe and how Joe works, and Joe has done it at a very high level for a very long time. He’s got a great guy to follow, watch, learn and see how it’s done.”

“I think the bottom line is he’s coming to compete as a backup. Joe’s the starter,” Elway said. “When we look at it, we’re hoping Drew is the future. But Joe is the starter, is going to be the starter and he’s going to battle.”

The move certainly makes plenty of sense for Denver. Elway has used up plenty of resources in recent years to help stabilize the quarterback position. Unfortunately, his efforts have been to no avail thus far after both the Case Keenum signing and their recent bevy of picks through the draft did not pan out.

Regardless, there is still good reason for the Broncos to be optimistic moving forward. While Denver is hoping things go according to plan this time around, Flacco will be vying to avoid the same fate he endured with the Baltimore Ravens. He finds himself in familiar territory with another promising talent under center and will undoubtedly be looking to delay the Broncos' need for Lock moving forward.
