At this rate, Baker Mayfield might be a Cleveland Browns legend whether or not he makes good on the incredible promise he showed as a rookie.

On Thursday's episode of The Herd, Colin Cowherd addressed his somewhat rocky relationship with the Browns' franchise signal-caller. Rather than offer an honest, contrite olive branch of sorts, though, the FOX Sports personality took a not-so-thinly-veiled shot at not just Mayfield, Browns general manager John Dorsey, and their team, but also the city of Cleveland at large.

“John Dorsey got fired by Kansas City. Baker Mayfield was a walk-on twice and Cleveland's been the laughing stock of the league. They're all three peas in a pod. They work together,” Cowherd said. “Dorsey gets maligned for taking high-risk guys and getting whacked, and Baker got looked past twice by college programs and he's got a chip on his shoulder. And Cleveland, I mean, let's be honest, for years it was known as “the mistake by the lake,” the city gets whacked. In the end, these three just work together.”

Mayfield's response?

Cowherd, it bears mentioning, bragged about increased traffic to his professional Facebook page and the resulting advertising dollars that his prior feud with Mayfield just before going in on the Browns and Cleveland. He's clearly just aiming to capitalize on that same dynamic with these needlessly inflammatory remarks.

Soon enough, if they continue on the upward trajectory begun in the second half of last season and continued with a splashy offseason, Mayfield and the Browns will have bigger things to worry about than Cowherd. Regardless, it's safe to say Cleveland – the team, not the city – will be the talk of he and fellow sports media personalities alike for years and years to come.
